About Select Soccer

Overview

The Southlake Select program is meant for youth that want to improve their soccer skills so they can play at a higher competitive level than is offered by recreational teams. Southlake tries to keep costs low so that all youth can play, regardless of the financial situation of their family. As a result, most teams are coached and managed by volunteers, but teams can opt for a professional team trainer if so desired. Coaches are encouraged to complete coach certification courses to provide them the skills to better train their players.

Southlake starts forming select teams at U9, and has teams at all age groups up to U19. Southlake follows all US Youth Soccer player development guidelines for U9-U12 select teams, which includes promoting player development over whether our teams win or lose at these formative ages.

Select tryouts typically are held in May; dates vary depending on the age group. After tryouts are complete, teams can start scheduling practices with Southlake at local turf or grass fields such as Hazen HSFoster HSMaywood MSStarfireMcKnight MSRon Regis Park, among others. Southlake select teams play in at least 1 or 2 summer tournaments, including our 6-A-Side, to assess their competitive level and get ready for fall league play. Most select teams play in the North Puget Sound League (NPSL), but a few opt for the Puget Sound Premier League (PSPL) and South Sound United League (SSUL) for fall and spring season.

Teams are encouraged to play in post-season tournaments during the winter, such as Washington Youth Soccer’s Founders Cup (Select) and Presidents Cup (Premier/Select).
